Final Grade Calculator

It’s the question students ask every semester: “What do I need on the final to get the grade I want?” Instead of guessing, put in your current class grade, the final exam’s weight, and the grade you’re aiming for.

You’ll get the score to shoot for, a what-if calculation, and a friendly breakdown of how weighted grades work.

What do you need on the final?

Your current grade should be the average for all work already graded, excluding the final. Make sure your teacher’s gradebook follows that interpretation.

What does it mean when the final is 25%?

75% work done25% final exam
1Turn the final’s 25% weight into 0.25, leaving 0.75 for the rest of the work.
2Take 88 × 0.75 = 66 points already earned toward the course total.
390 − 66 = 24 points needed from the final. Divide 24 ÷ 0.25 = 96%.
Needed final = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight

The formula uses decimals: 25% becomes 0.25. An 88% current grade, 25%-weighted final, and 90% target mean 96% needed on the exam.

Why a final exam can move your grade so much

Finals don’t all count the same. If a final is 10% of a course, it changes your grade much less than a final worth 40%. That’s why this calculator asks for the weight, not just your current grade.

The usual weighted-grade formula is overall grade = current average × share already completed + final exam grade × final’s share. If your class includes another ungraded project or categories like homework, quizzes, and labs, you may need to treat those weights separately.

What if the answer says I need more than 100%?

That means your target isn’t mathematically reachable through the final alone under the weights you entered. For example, a very high target may require extra credit, missing assignments, a retake policy, or an earlier grade change. Check the actual class rules before making plans based on a hypothetical extra-credit possibility.

What if I only need a negative percentage?

That just means the goal is already mathematically guaranteed under your inputs, even with a zero on the final. It does not mean that skipping an exam is allowed; some classes require you to sit the exam to pass.

Are letter grades universal?

No. A 90 may be an A in one class and an A− or B+ in another. Grade boundaries, rounding, and minimum examination requirements vary. Use the syllabus rather than assuming a cutoff.
