GPA Calculator

Wondering what your grades add up to this semester? GPA isn’t a simple average when your classes have different credit hours. A four-credit class counts more than a one-credit class.

Put in your courses and grades, then see the number and the exact steps used to calculate it. No account or grade records needed.

Enter your classes

Use the unweighted U.S. 4.0 scale below. Enter 0 credits for any rows you don’t need. Some schools use different plus/minus values; see the guide below.

How GPA works when classes have different credits

1Convert each letter grade into grade points. For example, A = 4.0 and B = 3.0.
2Multiply that grade value by the credits earned in the class. A three-credit A = 12 quality points.
3Add every class’s quality points, then divide by the total graded credits.
GPA = Sum of (course credits × grade points) ÷ total graded credits

Example: A in 3 credits (12 points), B in 4 credits (12 points), and C in 3 credits (6 points) gives 30 points ÷ 10 credits = 3.00 GPA.

This is a credit-weighted average. Don’t add 4.0 + 3.0 + 2.0 and divide by three unless all the courses carry the same number of credits.

What counts toward GPA?

Schools normally calculate quality points by multiplying the grade’s numeric value by course credit hours. University of Utah Academic Advising explains the standard method with a plus/minus letter-grade table, and Notre Dame’s registrar shows the same weighted formula.

Pass/fail, incomplete, repeated courses, withdrawals, transfer work, and special programs may have rules that this general calculator doesn’t model. Some institutions count a B+ as 3.33 rather than 3.3, for example. Use the school’s published rules for official planning.

What if I need to raise my GPA?

Improving a cumulative GPA gets harder as more credits are already on your transcript. A new A is helpful, but it has less influence on a 90-credit record than on a 12-credit record. Enter your existing cumulative GPA and completed credits to estimate the new combined number.

If you’re wondering what grade you need on one exam to reach your goal, that’s a different calculation. Our Final Grade Calculator works backward from your target class grade and the exam’s weight.

Can my GPA be higher than 4.0?

Some high schools assign additional points to honors or AP/IB courses. That is a weighted GPA, and the bonus differs by school. This tool intentionally uses an unweighted 4.0 scale, so it won’t invent a weighting policy for you.

Does one F ruin everything?

An F usually contributes zero quality points for its GPA-counted credits. It can reduce the average substantially, but the actual result depends on the rest of your credits and your school’s retake policy. Check with an academic adviser for official grade-replacement rules.
