How Many Moving Boxes Do I Need?

Moving has a way of turning “we don’t have that much stuff” into thirty trips for more boxes. Let’s start with a published packing guide, adjust for how much you’re actually taking, and make a shopping list before the packing starts.

These numbers are estimates, not promises. You can enter your own store prices, too.

The three-box rule: pack by weight, not just by size

Small
Medium
Large
SmallBooks, cans, tools and other dense items. Keep the total safe to lift.
MediumOrdinary household items. Fill gaps without overstuffing.
LargeBedding, pillows and other light, bulky belongings.

Worked example: A 2–3 bedroom home starts with 10 small, 6 medium, 8 large and 3 wardrobe boxes in the reference guide. Adding 10% extra and rounding each type up gives 11 small, 7 medium, 9 large and 4 wardrobe: 31 boxes. This example doesn’t include additional book boxes or an adjustment for sparse/full belongings.

Circle what you’ve already packed, and cross out anything you’re donating. Pack essentials last, label every box by destination room, and keep important paperwork with you.

Why the box count can’t be perfectly exact

Two people can live in the same size house but own very different amounts of stuff. Closets, hobby supplies, book collections, attic storage and kitchenware all change the packing job. That’s why this calculator starts with published estimates, then gives you adjustments rather than pretending a bedroom count reveals your entire inventory.

The Home Depot Moving Supplies Calculator and its Home Depot/Penske reference guide provide a sensible starting mix. Our adjustments are transparent planning assumptions, not the retailer’s official algorithm.

Should I buy a moving-box kit?

A kit can save the trouble of collecting several sizes one at a time. But check how many small versus large boxes are included. A cheap kit with lots of oversized cartons might not help someone moving a wall of books. Compare the actual carton dimensions and weight limits before purchasing. If the kit already includes tape, don’t buy the same supplies twice.

What about free boxes?

Reusing clean, structurally sound boxes can lower the cost and reduce waste. Avoid damaged or wet cartons for valuable and fragile belongings. Keep food or chemical contamination in mind and don’t overload reused boxes.

How much packing tape?

Our tape estimate uses a simple minimum from the guide plus about one roll for every ten boxes. It’s a rough allowance, not a measured tape requirement. Roll lengths and sealing methods vary. Especially heavy boxes may need an approved stronger carton and tape.

What should I pack first?

Start with rarely used rooms, books, decorations and storage areas. Save daily medications, important documents, a few dishes, cleaning supplies and what you’ll need immediately after the move. Home Depot’s room-by-room packing guide offers additional tips.

These are optional category searches, not a specific kit I’ve personally tested. Look at the sizes, ratings and included quantities, then compare with local pickup.
